Part I-Chapter 19: THE FACES AND THE VOICE

Chapter 19
The Faces and The Voice
(Ó 2007)

Jared now opened his eyes to see some shadows that were on the ceiling overhead, and to feel the tranquil silence around him He had to be put back to sleep in the ICU because the nurses feared that he had become extremely agitated and they knew, even though with the severity of his injuries, that he had to remain absolutely motionless.

He had been removed from the ICU several hours ago and placed in his own private room. It was somewhat dark in the room, but outside as he glanced to his left and looked out the window he saw the darkness of evening. He then looked to his right where he saw that the door to his room was slightly ajar. There was a hallway there and he could see part of the nurses station. He moved his eyes straight ahead of him where he saw a clock on the wall. I showed that it was 2:15, and it must be in the AM, judging by the darkness, and the quiet of the hospital floor.

He felt nothing, nothing below his shoulders. Then, as his head cleared, the events started to come back to him. The quiet whispering voice from behind him. His demand of “always remember why this happened to you”, kept repeating itself in his head, over and over, and over again.

Then, with his voice repeating his demands, the faces began to invade his memory. The faces of all the boys he had been with, either by their own free will or not. The face of the very first boy ironically came first. The boy he seduced in Brazil when he was there for Carnival. Jared was sixteen then, the boy was half that age. It was then that Jared began to learn the power of money, and how it could buy silence, as well as any other thing that was needed.

Then, all the faces of all the boys that came afterwards. They clicked through his mind like a slide show. First as still images, then the events of his time spent with all those young boys began to fill his head, like film clips in a constant flow of instant replays.

The most common thing that stood out among every memory of every boy, was that of the expression on their faces when Jared would start to move his hands on their bodies and then underneath their clothing. The minority of them who were not paid for, had no expression of acceptance. All these others had a mixture of surprise and fear. It was these latter boys whose faces filled Jared’s head the most.

Then, reality began to settle in with Jared. He wanted to get up and get out of bed so that he could shake these images out of his mind. His brain made the command to his body that everyone takes for granted, however his body did not respond. He then tried to move his arms to pull the blankets off of him so that he could bring his legs over to the side of the bed. The only thing that happened was that his right hand moved slightly.

Fear began to envelope him. Now he began to remember the events of the previous evening. What he thought mat have been the previous evening because now he realized that he did not know how long he had been unconscious. He remembered the incredible strength of the man, how he had lifted him from the ground. Jared remembered how his toes were just an inch from the ground. He remembered the voice, soft, quiet, all most ghost like. Everything the man had said to him began to replay itself over and over. Now the man’s voice and demands began to mix with the faces of all the boys.

He then suddenly remembered the breaking sound that came when he felt the strike between his shoulder blades. The sudden excruciating pain that came and went as fast as the sound. He then remembered the silence, and how he felt that the man was standing still behind him. How he could not move, and was frightened to do so.

He remembered staring down into the darkness of the ground, his eyes just an inch from the perfectly manicured lawn. He remembered the aroma of the grass, freshly cut for the last time for the year. How some tome later that aroma began to mix with the smell of his urine and excrement.

Jared now tried to make his brain force his body to move, however to no avail. The reality of his situation had now punched its way into his head. The voice, the faces, the demands, the blow between his shoulders. It was all going off like a blender in his head.

Jared realized that he could not move, that his attacker made sure that he never could do so again.

The fear that Jared felt, combined with the voice and the memories, he did feel though the tears filling his eyes, he did feel his breathing start to hitch in what would have been a bought of crying, when suddenly he heard a sound come from his left side. A familiar sound.

Jared tried to turn his head to the left, however he did feel a restriction of some sort. He could feel his neck try to move, but something kept him from doing do. Something around his head and shoulders. So Jared moved his eyes to the left, and he just started to see something. So then Jared strained his eyes as far to his left as he could, and then he saw them.

He saw what he knew were his fathers feet propped up on a chair. Then sound he heard was that of a snort, followed by a slight moan from Mitchell Bartholomew as he slept in a chair next to his son. Jared then stop straining his eyes and neck to then relax and to look straight up to the ceiling. Jared felt the warmth of his tears as they streamed down his face.

Jared then started to remember the rest of the events from the previous evening. The hours that he had lied prone on the lawn to then at last hear the sound of his parents returning home. To when they finally came and found him in the back yard. The sound of his mother screaming and crying. The barking of orders to her from his father to call 9-1-1.

Then Jared remembered the conversation between him and his father while they waited for the ambulance and police. Jared telling him what happened, telling him what that man said and did.

Of what his father then said to him afterwards.

Jared now felt the involuntary demands from his brain to his body, the simple demand to his hand to wipe the tears from his face. It was not being obeyed.

So now Jared forced himself to stop crying, to stop the flow of tears down his face and let them dry. It became easy for him to do because he used the anger and hatred he had towards his father to do so.

Jared was a combination of emotion and memory. The voice, the faces, the recollections, the anger, and the hatred. All now flowing from their own faucets.

“Don’t let him see you crying,” Jared thought to himself, so as to bring the stream of his tears to a halt, “don’t let that mother fucking, scum, pig, bastard see you cry.”

Part I-Chapter 18: THE ICU

Chapter 18
The ICU
(Ó 2007)

Jared Bartholomew had begun to awaken. Slowly the sounds around him began to fade in, the sounds of peoples voices, phones ringing, and machinery, some sort of machinery. The machines were clicking and beeping. He also heard the sounds of wheels, wheels like those of a cart of some sort.

He heard the sound of his own breathing. Slow breathing, and he felt his breath exiting his nostrils onto his upper lip, however it was somewhat obstructed because of the oxygen tube on his nose. He tried to open his eyes but found that he could not. He strained to open his eyelids, but he could only see the blur of light through the shadows of his eyelashes. After several attempts to open his eyes, he finally surrendered.

He could feel that his lips, they felt as if they were glued together from the constant build up of drying saliva and he could hear the faint tearing sound they made when he opened them slightly. There seemed to be an effort also just to open and close his lips in such an insignificant width. They made a faint smacking as he repeated the motion of opening and closing his lips.

Apparently though, Jared had caught someone’s attention.

“Mr. Bartholomew?” he heard the woman’s voice say, “Mr. Bartholomew? Can you hear me?”

He lip synced the answer “yes”, it was a very small movement with no sound from his voice, however whomever this woman was, she understood.

“Mr. Bartholomew, can you hear me?”

Again, he lip synced “yes”.

“Mr. Bartholomew, you’re now in the Intensive Care Unit at Evanston Northwestern. Do you understand?”

He lip synced “yes” again. His memory now was starting to come back. His father finding him, screaming at his mother to phone 9-1-1.

“You have been out of surgery now for over four hours.” The woman said, “The surgery itself lasted some twelve. As soon as the anesthesia wears off some more and your vital signs are more stable we will be moving you to your own room, OK?”

He lip synced “OK”. He wanted to move, but he could not. He tried to lift his arms, but there was no movement. He remembered the woman saying something about anesthesia. He thought that maybe that was it, all the anesthesia was keeping him from moving. Then the memory of his father again, he and his father having a heated conversation in the back yard. However, he could not see his father, all he could remember was the aroma of the lawn.

He thought again of the anesthesia, he thought of how potent all the chemicals that were in his bloodstream must be, because he literally could not feel anything.

--“Do not resist me.”--

He heard his voice now in his head.

--“You’re so beautiful. There’s not a hair on you”--

If he could have done it, his eyes would have bolted open, however he still could not open them. He now remembered the voice, soft, ever so soft. Done audibly enough so that he, Jared Bartholomew, alone would be the only one to hear it.

--“Always remember why this happened to you. Always admit to what you have done.”--

“This?” Jared thought, “What do you mean this?” The memory then of the sudden pain in his back flashed into his head, the memory of what felt like a sledgehammer hitting him between his shoulder blades.

--“I will be watching you. Always.”--

Jared now remembered the hands that first had his head in a vice grip, the shear power of the man he never saw, how his feet were lifted from the ground. He could still feel the hand that covered his mouth and face. Jared tried to bring his own hands to his face so that he could try and rub the feeling of the hand that was on his face away, but his arms would not move.

--“I can make this worse for you. I promise you.”--

Jared began to breath heavy, still unable to move or open his eyes.

--“I will return to you. Do you understand?”--

“Uhhhhmmmmmm.” Jared moaned. “Mmmmmmmm.”

Soon Jared heard the voice of the woman again, “Is everything alright Mr. Bartholomew? Are you feeling any pain?”

“Uhhmmmmmmmmm.” Jared moaned in the normal sleepy way that the nurses were use too because of all the narcotic pain killers all their patients were under the influence of. The moan from Jared seemed the same calm as the others before.

However, what the nurses believed was moaning from Jared Bartholomew was far from what they thought. Jared Bartholomew was doing the best he could in what was really going on with him.

Jared Bartholomew was actually screaming from his fright.

Part I-Chapter 17: DOING THE MATH

Chapter 17

Doing the Math
(Ó 2007)

Forty-five minutes later found David and Noel on their way back to their Chicago office. Noel was doing the driving and broke the silence that had been between them. “You haven’t said a word since we left the hospital. Matter of fact, you haven’t said anything since we left the estate.”

“Huh? Yeah, sorry.” David said, snapping out of his thoughts. “I’m just trying to do the math to this. But, I keep coming up with two answers to the same problem.”

“Or a big zero altogether?”

“Precisely.”

Noel now turned the car off Lake Shore Drive and merged onto Michigan Avenue. “If you had to choose one of those answers, which would it be? I mean, do you feel like you leaning more to one than the other?”

David rubbed his eyes and answered, “Yes. I feel in my gut, it’s him. It’s the ‘Dark Man’.

“But why would he go after Bartholomew? Noel asked, “I mean he’s the Midwest’s crown prince; Why him?”

“That’s one thing that makes me believe that it’s not our guy.” David said, “Plus the fact that nothing was taken from the home. I mean Mom Bartholomew must have some jewelry lying around. Also, anyone will think that there’s some cash somewhere in that house too.” David then paused in thought for a second, then asked, “I saw you and Hatton searching the sides of the house. What were you both looking for?”

“We were looking for any sign of entry or exit. Hatton thinks he may have been waiting for Bartholomew outside, so we looked for any sign of an intruder out there.”

“You find anything?”

“No, not a thing, nothing at all.”

David then sat back into his seat and sighed, “That’s what makes me think that it is.”

Part I-Chapter 16: SECRETS AND SECRECY

Chapter 16
Secrets and Secrecy
(Ó 2007)

Some ninety minutes later, David and Noel sat in their car on the tenth floor of the parking lot of Evanston Northwestern Hospital. It was the top floor that was in the open. They were facing south and saw the buildings of downtown Chicago and the beginnings of the beautiful colors of autumn that were just starting to show on the trees. The engine was still running, and Noel was speaking on his mobile phone with the man they were sent there to meet.

“Yes sir, were all the way to the southwest side just as you said.” Noel said into his phone. When Noel was paused, David could here the sound of the voice from the man on the other end. “Uh, it’s Section C. Yes. Hold on a sec.” Noel then looked around the parking lot while holding the phone to his ear. He spotted what he was looking for on their right, another three spaces over. It was a large silver Ford Van. “There it is. Yes sir, it’s a few spaces from us. What’s that? Right there? Sure, yes sir. We’ll meet you right there. Two minutes? You got it. See ya then.”

Noel closed the flip phone shut. David asked, “So what’s the deal?”

“He’s on his way up,” Noel answered, “he said he’ll be here in a couple of minutes. He wants to meet us by his van over there.”

Both men got out of their car, locked it, then began to make their way the short distance to the van. “Man, what is it with all this secrecy bullshit?” David said, “I mean ‘make sure we’re not seen’ and ‘go through the back way’. I feel like Woodward and Bernstein on our way to meet ‘Deep Throat’.”

“I know what you’re saying. Ever since we left, and now this,” he said holding up his phone, “my ‘suspicion meter’ has been pegging the needle.”

They now both stood next to the van, and began to wait with anticipation. The wait was not to be long. David was looking to the northeast side of the parking lot where there was a top floor entrance to the hospital. David saw a large man in a dark blue suit come out from the doorway and look straight to their direction. The man then began to immediately make his way towards them.

“I guess that must be him.” David said.

“Shit, when he said two minutes, he meant two minutes.”

The large man was soon within a distance where they could see his face and hear his voice in a normal speaking volume. “Sergeant Jaworski? Sergeant Todd?” He asked with a deep New York accent. Their names came out as Jaw-WHAR-skee and TAHD. He wore a big smile and extended his hand to them both.

“I’m Jaworski.” Noel said as he shook the mans hand, “This is Todd.” Then the man, who was in his forties and distinguished looking shook hands with David.

“Lieutenant Arthur Hatton, Kenilworth Police. Nice to meet you both.” He said in his extremely noticeable accent. “Your pictures from the papers don’t do you guys any justice.”

“They never do,” David said, “so what gives in there sir?”

“Well, the kid is still in surgery. His old man had some hot shot neurosurgeon from downtown come in and take charge of the whole thing. As soon as they’re able, and the kid is stabilized, they’re gonna transfer him to Northwestern downtown.”

“Are they doing a spinal fusion?” Noel asked.

“That’s what I’ve been told,” the Lieutenant said, then motioned to the van, “come on get in.”

“Where we going?” David asked.

“I’m going to take you to the Bartholomew estate. Let you take a look for yourselves.” He took out his keys and unlocked the doors, “I need you both to stay in the back. Don’t let anyone see you back there until we get to the house.”

David and Noel did not say anything, they just obeyed. Both of them felt some reluctance to all of the secrecy, but went along with everything just the same. They both climbed into the back seat of the van and noticed that there were curtains on the windows in the back and all were drawn closed. Lieutenant Hatton then climbed into the drivers seat , shut the door and started the engine. He then pulled out from his parking space and then began to make his way down the ten flights of parking floors.

David and Noel sat quietly in the back. They said nothing until they were finally out of the parking lot and on there way to the Bartholomew estate. Soon they were at the traffic light where the van turned left going northward along Sheridan Road.

David then broke the silence. “Not from around here, are you sir.”

“How can you tell?” Lieutenant Hatton asked with a small laugh.

“The accent is still strong sir.” David answered, “New York City?”

“The Bronx to be exact.” He said, “I had a basketball scholarship at Illinois State. I met my wife there. She’s from here in Chicago, so I stayed here with her.”

“Basketball huh?” Noel asked.

“Yep, I was a guard.”

David then interceded, “Begging your pardon sir, but I have to ask. What’s with all the secrecy here? I mean with all these, for lack of better words, ‘covert tactics’ and such, with us not being seen? What’s going on?”

“It’s the way Mr. Bartholomew wants it, the kids dad. He’s a good friend of the Chief’s, and let’s face it, he’s well connected. I’m baffled by it myself, but this is the way he wants everything right now.”

“That seems strange to me,” Noel added, “his son just had his spine snapped, and he’s worried about what people are going to know.”

“Seems strange to me too Sergeant. I’m giving him some slack though, after all, he was the one who found the kid.”

“Where in the house did he find him” David asked.

“He wasn’t found in the house, rather he was found lying face down in the back yard. He was there for a few hours from what I understand. You both will see everything when we get there. It’ll be just another couple of minutes.”

David and Noel looked at each other, they felt each others suspicions grow. Already they were skeptical of many things, however as with everything else, a little patience and some time would bring everything into light.

Soon they were drawing near to the Bartholomew estate. Across the road from the front gate were all the news vans from all around the city waiting for the latest news to broadcast. Lieutenant Hatton turned to both David and Noel and said, “I need you both to scrunch down, we don’t want to have any of those people see that you are with us.”

David gave the Lieutenant a skeptical glance, “With all due respect sir, but what!?”

“Please Sergeant, I too am under orders.” Lieutenant Hatton seem to plead. “I’d appreciate it. It’s all just bullshit politics. You all should know about that by now.”

“Sure sir.” Noel said. “C’mon Dave, let go along.”

David and Noel moved to the far back of the van. The curtains drawn on all the windows would conceal them perfectly from the prying media across the road. The van then slowed down and made a quick turn right then came to a stop at the front gate of the Bartholomew estate. There guarding the entranceway were two uniformed Kenilworth Police officers. They both recognized Lieutenant Hatton and waved him through. In a couple of seconds he turned and said “OK guys, come on up.”

When David and Noel came back to there seats they both were amazed by what they saw. The shear size and beauty of the Bartholomew estate.

“Jesus, look at the size of that house.” Noel said looking to the left side of the van.

“That’s just the guest house,” David said, noticing that some of the lights in the guest house were turned on, “Look straight ahead.”

“Da-yum!” Noel exclaimed, “This place is bigger than my high school! Playgrounds and all!”

The Lieutenant then said, “I park in front of the main house with your door to the front. Nobody out front will see you as we go in.”

Soon they were stopped directly in front of the enormous house. Lieutenant Hatton turned of the vans engine and quickly exited. He opened the side door to let both David and Noel out, “OK guys, were here. Let’s get inside quickly and I’ll fill you in on all the bullshit.”

David and Noel stepped out and quickly entered the home of Mitchell Bartholomew. Once the passed the front door they all stood in a giant foyer with white marble floors and pillars.

“Holy shit,” Noel said gasping, “now this is just fucking incredible.”

“Beautiful,” was all David could add.

“Let’s go straight through to the back.” Lieutenant Hatton said. He led them from the foyer to the large living room. As expected it was furnished impeccably. There was a large glass sliding door that led to the outdoor patio. It too was of white concrete and marble. Lieutenant Hatton paused with them both there.

“OK, here’s the way it is guys,” the Lieutenant began. “When the 911 call came in early this morning, our Chief was informed. As I said before, he’s a good friend of Mitchell Bartholomew, as well as the Mayor of Kenilworth, and as is the Mayor of Chicago. Being the Chief of police of Kenilworth, he of course is up to date on all well documented crimes in the area. When he first learned of our young Mr. Bartholomew’s attack, and of the injury he sustained, the first persons he thought of were you two guys.”

“I don’t know if we should be flattered or not.” David said.

“Anyways,” the Lieutenant continued, “The Chief wants to know if your ‘Dark Man’ may be involved in this, considering the similarities. What can you tell me about him?”

“I’ll answer that with a question sir,” David said, “what can you tell me about him?”

“Why nothing of course.”

“Then that makes three of us,” David continued, “all we know if that he’s a big man. But considering that he may have been wearing a bulky sweat pants with a hooded sweatshirt, and that the girl who saw him was traumatized, his size may have been over exaggerated. But, his strength wasn’t. The teenage rape victim whom he came to assist told us that he tossed her assailants around with one arm like rag dolls. Also, he has a deep soft spoken voice.”

“That’s it?” Lieutenant Hatton asked.

Noel answered, “Totally it. He left no trace of himself behind. It’s like he was never even there.”

“This could all be a copy cat too sir,” David said, “because it seems that the ‘Dark Man’ has just disappeared. The media doesn’t even discuss him anymore, they haven’t in months.”

“Which is one reason for all the secrecy Sergeant,” Lieutenant Hatton said, “If they pick up on the injury of the Bartholomew kid, and the fact he was attacked in his own home, there’s gonna be a feeding frenzy here.”

“Can we take a look around?” Noel asked.

“Sure thing,” Lieutenant Hatton answered, “let me show you where the father found him.”

Lieutenant Hatton escorted both men down the steps of the patio to the area of the lawn where Jared Bartholomew was found by his father early that morning. Yellow police tape had cordoned off the area, and the impression of Jared Bartholomew’s body was still visible in the well manicured grass.

“He was found right here,” the Lieutenant said as he presented the area to them, “as I said, he was here for a few hours.”

“That’s why you can still see the outline his body left,” David said, and then began to scan the area behind him, “His weight pressing down on the lawn for that length of time.” David scanned the patio, then proceeded to the far end of the back lawn. There he found another cement stairwell that led to a swimming pool area that overlooked Lake Michigan. The pool had been drained for the upcoming cold weather. He turned and faced the mansion, He looked to the area of the large house to his left where there were trees and bushes. He then looked to the house from his right at the landscaping there. Both area led to front of the home and the open area to the front gate. He saw how that if the attacker left in that direction, he would never be seen from the street or the other homes because of the high wall and trees.

He then looked down the stairwell to the pool. Again, with the darkness it would be almost impossible for anyone to see any intruder, even if someone were on the beach because there were a thousand places to conceal oneself.

He then turned to make his way back to Noel and Lieutenant Hatton. Both men were surveying the area around where Jared Bartholomew was found by his father.

“See anything?” Noel asked as he approached.

“Just a million ways to get out of here if I did it,” he answered, then asked the Lieutenant, “was Jared conscious when his father found him?”

“I believe he may have been, that a little cloudy area also.”

“Meaning sir?”

Mitchell Bartholomew has been tight lipped about this whole ordeal. He won’t tell us hardly anything about what he found or saw. As I said before, I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt because of everything.”

Noel then interjected, “Begging your pardon sir, but Dave and I? We never give anybody the benefit of the doubt. May I explain?”

“Please do Sergeant.”

“You just told me that the back door was open when Mitchell Bartholomew came home, correct?”

“Correct.”

“Also, that the position that Jared was in, flat on his face with his arms out?”

“Again, correct.”

“Well sir, if I just found my only child in that strange position, not yet knowing what was wrong? Well, I would have a little sense of panic, and would want to rush to him and turn him over.”

David then said, “I see where your going.”

“Yes,” Noel continued, “in order to prevent him from doing so, it would have to have been Jared telling him to not move him. With a spinal injury like this, more damage could have been caused, maybe even death.”

“You sure picked up a lot from Dr. MacDonald from the last time.” David said.

Noel then continued, “Then we have to add in a hysterical mother, and she made the 911.”

“And a hysterical mother would have to be calmed down, maybe even forcefully.” David added.

“I can see your point,” the Lieutenant said, “are you two always this suspicious of everyone.”

“Yes sir,” David said, “We first suspect everyone, then work to weed them out. I’m not saying though that Mitchell had anything to do with his sons accident. That’s not what is making me apprehensive of this whole thing.”

“Then what is?” the Lieutenant asked.

“It’s why him?” Noel said, “Why Jared Bartholomew? You also just told me that nothing was taken from the home. It was untouched.”

“Well,” David said, “people like the Bartholomew’s? They got more enemies than friends. That black tie affair they were at last night? I can guarantee you that most those guys he was schmoozin with? As they were patting him on the back looking for the soft spot.”

“Agreed there,” the Lieutenant said, “the price of power.”

“And,” David said, “If by some slight chance this is the ‘Dark Man’, again, you gotta ask ‘why?’ Why would he want to travel all this way to attack Jared Bartholomew? In his own back yard? To go from a couple of scum bags, to him? What makes him so special. That’s what makes me think that this may be a copy cat.”

“But it’s still a loose end,” the Lieutenant said, “a loose end that we hope you two can help tie up.”

“We’ll do what can sir,” Noel said, “but if this is like the last time, it’s gonna be a little time before we can talk to Jared. He’s the only one that can help put this all together.”

Then David added, “And with all this covert action? With his father running the whole show? Is he going to help or hinder us?”

There was a pause of silence for a few seconds, then the Lieutenant said, “Well then, let me get you guys back to your car then. Like you said, were on hold until we can talk to the kid. But until we are able to talk to him, we’re going to have to continue with the covert action as you call it. Let’s get back to my van. You guys don’t let yourselves be seen as we leave. Keep a lid on this until we’re able to interview the kid, understand?”

“Yes sir.” Noel said.

“Sure thing sir.” David added.

“Let’s get back then.” The Lieutenant said, and then began to make his way through the house and back to his van. David and Noel entered the van from the side doorway again and sat all the way in the back . The Lieutenant placed himself in the drivers seat, shut the door, and started the van. He then began to drive slowly on the driveway making his way back to the front gate. As they drove past the guest house, David again saw that the lights of the house were turned on.

As the van made its way back onto Sheridan Road, David made another mental note concerning the lights of the guest house, and added it to his cerebral list of all the suspicions he now had of the entire ordeal that dealt with the attack of Jared Bartholomew.

Part I-Chapter 15: STUCK ON NOTHING

Chapter 15
Stuck on Nothing
(Ó 2007)

Later that Sunday in the early afternoon hours, David Todd was in the office that he shared with his partner, Noel Jaworski. He was alone in the office at that moment, sitting at his desk, in the middle of the most tedious and time-consuming part of any police officers career, toiling on the paperwork.

The only sound in the office came from the radio on his desk. It was tuned into the play-by-play broadcast of the Chicago Bears game. “Da Bears” as they are affectionately referred to by their fans, were playing the Buffalo Bills at Soldier Field and were leading in the third quarter.

He finished with the current report that he was working on. He let out a sigh as he gathered the papers of the report together, shuffled them, then tapped them on his desk by their sides to form a tight, neat stack, and placed them into a file folder.

He then stood from his desk and stepped over to the file cabinet, where he would place the new file in its assigned place among all of the other files that currently occupied the drawers. He opened the drawer and while fingering his way through the other folders he heard the office door open behind him. Without looking back, he said, “Bears are still up by three Ski”.

“It’s not Noel.” The voice of Captain Xiang said.

David turned around to see his commander standing in the doorway. “Oh hey Boss. C’mon in. What’s up?”

“Where is Jarworski?” Captain Xiang asked.

“He went down the hall to get some more forms we need,” David answered, “he should be back in a few minutes.”

Captain Xiang stepped into the office and shut the door behind him. David noticed an expression of deep concern on his face, as if he were about to deliver him some bad news.

“Did you hear about Jared Bartholomew this morning?” He asked David.

“Chicago’s wonder boy? Yeah I heard. Something about him taking a spill in the house or something.” David noticed that the tight-lipped disturbed expression had not left the Captains face, “But, from the look on your face sir, I would venture to say that there is a question of the accuracy in the reports by our local media.” He then shut the file drawer.

The Captain stepped up to David and spoke quietly, “I just got off the phone with the Chief Investigator over in Kenilworth, and he would like to speak with both you and Noel.”

“Speak to us!? What for!?”

The Captain continued in his quiet calm tone, “The Chief there informed me that Bartholomew did not have any sort of accident, rather he was attacked.”

David now felt a slight feeling of confusion, “So, what does that have to do with Noel and me?”

Captain Xiang stepped closer to David and said in a serious tone, “Because during the attack, Bartholomew had his spine broken.” He then stepped back, “He could have serious paralysis.”

David now felt as if an ice cold ball of iron dropped into the pit of his stomach.

The Captain now spoke in a normal tone, “I need you both to get over to Evanston Northwestern Hospital by the university. Bartholomew is now at this moment in surgery, and has been for the past couple of hours. Go to the top floor of the parking lot, you both will be met there by the investigator in charge, Lieutenant Art Hatton. He will fill you in on everything.”

“OK Boss.”

“And David,” The Captain said with a tone of insistence, “everyone involved wants this kept quiet for the moment. The Bartholomew family, Kenilworth P.D., all involved. The media is all over the place on this. Both you and Noel can’t be seen going there.”

“We do our best Boss, that’s all I can guarantee.”

“I realize that.” Captain Xiang said, “Just in case, what do you have so far on the ‘Dark Man’?”

“Well, sir, sorry to say that we are still stuck on nothing about him ever since the first night. A big goose egg, and no help from anyone.”

Part I-Chapter 14: SUNDAY MORNING SHIFT

Chapter 14
Sunday Morning Shift
(Ó 2007)

Romana Alexiev had just finished buttoning up her maids uniform to start the Sunday morning shift at the Michigan Avenue hotel where she was employed. She was on her way to the Housekeeping Office to receive her daily schedule, which informs her of which rooms to clean for either the normal morning service, or for the patrons who where checking out. However, she was met in the hallway by her friend and fellow employee of the hotel, Ellyian Krupskya.

Ellyian seemed very excited and exasperated. She ran up to Romana swiftly and grabbed her by the wrist. “Romana! You must come with me quickly! Hurry, you must see this!” She said to her in their native Russian language, and began to lead Romana from the employees towards the main floor.

“What is it Ellyian?” She asked her friend.

“Shhh! Just hurry.” Ellyian said then lead her friend briskly down the hallway to the main entrance that lead to the grand lobby of the hotel. She then lead her past the front desk, past the bar and to the lounge area. The lounge area had fine sofa and chairs that were arranged around a large television set. There were some hotel patrons watching the television, some were having coffee and pastries from the large continental breakfast buffet that was set up along the wall behind them.

The television showed what was now the final seconds of a commercial for a car dealership. Ellyian pointed to the television screen and then stood close to her friend. She placed her arm around her shoulder and held her close to her side, bracing her for the news broadcast that was just about to return.

“Ellyian tell me please,” Romana said, “I have a busy schedule and . . .” She froze as she saw the news anchor return. In the upper right side of the television screen was a picture of Jared Bartholomew.

“Returning now to our top story, “ the news anchor said, “Jared Bartholomew, the heir to the Bartholomew media dynasty and vice-president of MB Media, was found in his Kenilworth home early this morning apparently the victim of a serious accident. We now return to our correspondent Jennifer Kell, live from Evanston Northwestern Hospital. Jenny.”

The television screen then switch to a young red haired woman standing in front the Emergency Room entrance of a hospital. Below her image was a graphic that read: JARED BARTHOLOMEW HOSPITILIZED. In the upper left hand corner was the word: LIVE. Romana now crossed her arms, stood rigid, and her eyes were now piercing toward the television screen. Ellyian felt the muscles in her body become tense, and she heard slow, angry breathing coming from her nostrils.

“Yes Jose,” the girl said as she started her report, “all we can tell you at this moment is coming from the Bartholomew family spokespeople. Apparently Mitchell Bartholomew and his wife arrived home around 1:30 AM this morning from a formal fundraiser held in downtown Chicago, to find that their son had been a victim of some sort of terrible accident. Kenilworth Police and Fire departments responded to a desperate 9-1-1 call from the home by Mrs. Bartholomew and arrived to treat Jared Bartholomew at the scene and immediately transported him here to Evanston Northwestern Hospital. Police and Fire at this time can not release any information to us on Jared’s condition, which has been reported to us as ‘extremely serious’. We do know that Jared Bartholomew is at this moment now being prepared to undergo surgery, details not available at this time.”

“No idea what the surgery is for at this time, right Jennifer?” The anchorman asked.

“No Jose, I’m sorry. The Bartholomew family spokespeople are making it difficult for any of us here to get any information about what happened and what’s going on. They claim that the family values their privacy and all details on Jared Bartholomew’s condition will be given to us in a statement. When that statement will be given is a mystery also.”

Romana then broke from Ellyian and walked away. She quickly walked back past the bar and front desk through the doors where she and Ellyian first came. There was a sign on the doors that read: EMPLOYEES ONLY. Romana pushed the doors open angrily and took a few steps in. In a few seconds she was joined by Ellyian.

Romana stood there with her arms crossed around herself with tears welling up in her eyes. Ellyian took her in her arms to comfort her. Ellyian then asked her speaking in Russian, “Are you going to be alright Romana?”

Romana answered her while her face was pressed against Ellyian’s shoulder, “I hope he is dying,” she said coldly, “I hope he is dying slowly … and that he is in much pain.”

PART I - CHAPTER 13: WITH ONE STONE

Chapter 13

With One Stone
(Ó 2007)

Eighteen minutes afterwards, a late model black Jaguar XJ6 stopped at the gate of the Bartholomew estate. The gate was a high brick archway, with a wrought iron gate. The archway had a nine-foot high ivy covered brick fence spreading on either side of it.

The luster on the automobile was so exceptional that if you were to take it from where there were any streetlights, you just may see the stars themselves reflecting from the body. The silver rims shone so that it seemed that they did not need any light whatsoever to be seen at night.

Two figures sat in the front seat of the Jaguar, that of an adult and the other a young boy. The window of the drivers side rolled down and the man behind the wheel reach over and pressed the signaling button of the intercom system that would alert whoever was in the large house letting them know that someone was at the front gate. The driver waited for about thirty seconds, then pressed the button again.

At the exact same moment, unknown to the driver, Jared Bartholomew heard the buzzer inside his home. He was still laying face down and motionless. He believed that the man who had attacked him was still standing directly behind him, just choosing to remain silent to torment him. However, his attacker had left him alone as soon as he stood up. Jared tried to say something to the man whom he believed was still behind him, but the pain he was experiencing caused him to remain quiet.

Jared knew it was the “Ice Cream Man” with his “treat” at the front gate. Normally he would press the intercom button to confirm that it was he, and then press the remote button to open the gates. However, this evening was far from normal. He lie there still, with his arms out to his sides, with his legs and feet together. Looking like some mock crucifixion. Not only could he not move, but also was too frightened too.

He heard the buzzer go off for a third time. He began to feel himself cry. Assistance for him was so close, yet he could do nothing to obtain it.

He heard the buzzer go off for a fourth time; he knew the “Ice Cream Man” would be persistent, after all the “treat” that he had for him was going to cost Jared twenty thousand dollars cash upon delivery.

Jared heard the buzzer go off again for what would be the last time - - -

- - - He stood there, now outside, across from and slightly down the street of the Bartholomew estate. He was frozen in his position, totally absorbed and blended into the darkness of the shadows of Sheridan Road. He watched the man in the drivers seat of the Jaguar that was now parked at the gate of the Bartholomew estate through a small and powerful hand held monocular. It was a skill that he had learned well, able to conceal himself anywhere in any situation, and conduct surveillance. He observed as the drivers displeasure began to build after the second time he reached through the drivers side window, rang the intercom system and then would receive no answer.

He watched as the driver reached out of the window for the third time in his effort to summon Jared Bartholomew, who was at that moment lying motionless in the backyard of the estate. The driver seemed agitated now and opened the door of the Jaguar and stepped out.

Now he focused his monocular on the driver. Now he saw the drivers face, who he was, and what he looked like. He was about five foot ten inches, shoulder length blond hair and a dark beard that was neatly groomed around his jaw line and upper lip. He was wearing a silk black suit with a black silk shirt open at the collar. He stepped over to the wrought iron gate and peered through it, looking towards the sizeable home.

He now focused the monocular to the passenger of the Jaguar. It was a young boy, around eleven or twelve years of age. He also had blond hair, cut and combed neatly as if he had just came from a barber shop. He appeared to be wearing a dark jacket with a white shirt opened to his chest. He had light colored eyes and by the expression on his face he seemed to be anxious.

He turned his monocular now back to the driver, he paced in the entranceway, looking to the house, then to his wristwatch. The driver would step out on to the street to nervously look in both directions and then he would step to the gate to look to the house again. He continued with this cycle over the next two minutes. He then stepped over and pressed the button to the intercom system for the fourth time, and waited again for an answer that would never come. The driver’s agitation grew, and both his hands closed into fists. The boy in the passenger seat remained silent and still.

In another few seconds he observed as the driver angrily stepped to the intercom system for the fifth and now final time and pushed down aggressively on the signal button, as if this would bring the results he sought. Still no answer from the home. The driver then stepped back to the open door of the Jaguar. The driver sat back down behind the steering wheel, glaring towards the enormous house. The driver then reached to the area of the transmission stick shift that was between the seats, where there was a mobile phone.

He heard the sound of the boys voice asking the driver something. The boy seemed to be asking what the problem may be. “Shut the fuck up”, he heard the driver say to the boy with a deep accent. He recognized it as a Slovakian accent. He made a mental note of it.

He saw the dim light from keyboard of the mobile phone. The driver began to press the buttons, however he only pressed in three numbers. The driver hesitated, looked as if he had second thoughts, then turned the mobile phone off and replaced it to its stand. The driver then stared towards the house again, then sat back fiercely against the drivers seat. The driver appeared to be trying to access the situation and to make a decision. Finally, he reached to door of the Jaguar, grabbed it firmly and slammed it shut. As the driver started the engine, he could hear the driver swearing “asshole, that fucking asshole“, to the boy. The boy just looked at the driver and remained totally still.

The window on the drivers side rolled up, the Jaguar slowly moved backwards onto Sheridan Road. The rear of the Jaguar was now in full view of him, and he focused the monocular onto the license plate. He saw the plate number, a vanity plate, which made it much easier for him to memorize.

ICM CHGO

He watched as the Jaguar then drove away southbound on Sheridan Road, until it disappeared from his view. He waited for another half a minute, then stepped out from his camouflage of the darkness and onto the sidewalk of Sheridan Road. He then thought to himself, ‘two birds, one stone’.

He then began to walk southward on Sheridan Road, blending in with all the darkened scenery, confident he would not be detected. He looked around himself and was amazed how quiet and serene everything was. It was as silent as it was dark, almost like they both were as one.

He glanced quickly to the Bartholomew estate from across the street and then looked forward. ‘These people’, he thought as he briskly walked passed.
