Part I-Chapter 17: DOING THE MATH

Chapter 17

Doing the Math
(Ó 2007)

Forty-five minutes later found David and Noel on their way back to their Chicago office. Noel was doing the driving and broke the silence that had been between them. “You haven’t said a word since we left the hospital. Matter of fact, you haven’t said anything since we left the estate.”

“Huh? Yeah, sorry.” David said, snapping out of his thoughts. “I’m just trying to do the math to this. But, I keep coming up with two answers to the same problem.”

“Or a big zero altogether?”

“Precisely.”

Noel now turned the car off Lake Shore Drive and merged onto Michigan Avenue. “If you had to choose one of those answers, which would it be? I mean, do you feel like you leaning more to one than the other?”

David rubbed his eyes and answered, “Yes. I feel in my gut, it’s him. It’s the ‘Dark Man’.

“But why would he go after Bartholomew? Noel asked, “I mean he’s the Midwest’s crown prince; Why him?”

“That’s one thing that makes me believe that it’s not our guy.” David said, “Plus the fact that nothing was taken from the home. I mean Mom Bartholomew must have some jewelry lying around. Also, anyone will think that there’s some cash somewhere in that house too.” David then paused in thought for a second, then asked, “I saw you and Hatton searching the sides of the house. What were you both looking for?”

“We were looking for any sign of entry or exit. Hatton thinks he may have been waiting for Bartholomew outside, so we looked for any sign of an intruder out there.”

“You find anything?”

“No, not a thing, nothing at all.”

David then sat back into his seat and sighed, “That’s what makes me think that it is.”
